Other Health Effects

"There are documented biological effects of RF fields even at low, non-thermal exposure levels, below Safety Code 6 exposure limits.  These biological effects include alterations in the activity of the enzyme ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), in calcium regulation, and in the permeability of the blood-brain barrier.  Some of these biological effects brought about by non-thermal exposure levels of RF could potentially be associated with adverse health effects." Excerpted from page 3 of the Royal Society Report.

Published and peer-reviewed science gives evidence of the following health risks from exposure to wireless technologies:

Glioma, acoustic neuroma, meningioma, leukemia, DNA damage, chromosomal abnormalities, blood brain barrier leakage, calcium efflux, sperm head abnormalities, DNA and RNA oxidative damage in the mitochondria, reproductive abnormalities, Alzheimers, breast cancer risk, increase in primary malignancies, changes in corticosterone levels and immune system function.

Brain Diseases Affecting More People

and Starting Earlier Than Ever Before

From an article published in ScienceDaily May 10, 2013:

First paragraph:
"Professor Colin Pritchard's latest research published in journal Public Health has found that the sharp rise of dementia and other neurological deaths in people under 74 cannot be put down to the fact that we are living longer. The rise is because a higher proportion of old people are being affected by such conditions -- and what is really alarming, it is starting earlier and affecting people under 55 years."

Final paragraph:
"When asked what he thought caused the increases he replied, 'This has to be speculative but it cannot be genetic because the period is too short. Whilst there will be some influence of more elderly people, it does not account for the earlier onset; the differences between countries nor the fact that more women have been affected, as their lives have changed more than men's over the period, all indicates multiple environmental factors. Considering the changes over the last 30 years -- the explosion in electronic devices, rises in background non-ionising radiation- PC's, micro waves, TV's, mobile phones; road and air transport up four-fold increasing background petro-chemical pollution; chemical additives to food etc. There is no one factor rather the likely interaction between all these environmental triggers, reflecting changes in other conditions. For example, whilst cancer deaths are down substantially, cancer incidence continues to rise; levels of asthma are un-precedented; the fall in male sperm counts -- the rise of auto-immune diseases -- all point to life-style and environmental influences. These "statistics" are about real people and families, and we need to recognise that there is an "epidemic" that clearly is influenced by environmental and societal changes.'"

iPads Could Affect Implanted Heart Devices

Early Study - Young researcher suggests that users avoid placing tablets too close to the chest

" . . . The bottom line? Insinga at Cushing Neuroscience recommended that physicians discuss with their patients the risks that technological devices may pose to the settings and function of any implanted devices, and check their patients' medical devices frequently. "No more 'set it and forget it,'" he said.

"Chien thinks the issue will continue to pose problems unless the design of tablets changes. "With the aging of the population, there's an expected increase in ICD placement and, with more than 100 million iPads sold, it's a concern," she said. . . .

"Last year, research published in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics suggested that the iPad 2 can interfere with the settings of magnetically programmable shunt devices in the brain when held within two inches of the technology.

"That study reported on a 4-month-old girl with hydrocephalus -- abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain -- who developed a shunt malfunction. This was due to a changed setting of the magnetically programmable valve that regulates the flow of CSF out of the brain cavity, or ventricle. The mother had been using an iPad 2 while holding the infant.

"An expert noted how difficult it could be to detect such a malfunction. . . .

Girl, 4, treated for iPad addiction

A GIRL aged four is having psychiatric treatment after becoming Britain's youngest known iPad addict.

" . . . She is one of many child patients displaying compulsive behaviour after using the tablet device from an early age.

"Doctors say she is so addicted to games on her parents' iPad that she experiences withdrawal symptoms when it is taken away. It comes days after a poll showed more than half of parents let their babies use a smartphone or tablet, with one in seven allowing it for four or more hours a day. . . .

"Internet Addiction Disorder is set to be recognised by the NHS in a manual for GPs.

"Childcare author Tanith Carey said: 'iPads, iPods and smartphones have become the new dummies for babies and toddlers.'

Children, Cell Phones and ADHD

Cell Phone Use May Increase Their Risk of ADHD

Excerpts in an April 2, 2013 Press Release from Joel M. Moskowitz, Ph.D., School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley:

A new study finds that children who use cell phones who are exposed to lead are at greater risk of developing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder than lead-exposed children who do not use cell phones much or at all.

"... preventing the use of mobile phones in children may be one measure to keep children from developing ADHD symptoms ..."

The Biological Effects of Weak Electromagnetic Fields (Goldsworthy)

Cell Phone radiation and harmful effects: Just how much more proof do you need? (2012)

"Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy has written this article about the harmful effects of electro magnetic radiation.

"It explains in some detail, but in lay-person's terms, the mechanisms underlying the various harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation from power lines and mobile telecommunication devices.

"The Industry can no longer claim that there is no known mechanism by which low level radiation can cause biological damage.

"It also goes on to say how the Industry, apparently deliberately, ignored warnings about the dangers involved in the specific pulse frequencies that they subsequently used in digital telecommunications. . . .

Prenatal and Postnatal Exposure to Cell Phone Use and Behavioural Problems in Children

University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, USA; and University of Aarhus, Aarhus, Denmark.November 2008

"Conclusions:

"Exposure to cell phones prenatally-and, to a lesser degree, postnatally-was associated with behavioral difficulties such as emotional and hyperactivity problems around the age of school entry. These associations may be noncausal and may be due to unmeasured confounding. If real, they would be of public health concern given the widespread use of this technology."

Exposure to Electricity May Increase Risk for Alzheimer's Disease and ALS

Research review finds evidence of neurodegenerative effects from electrical exposure.

Press Release Excerpt:
"Overall, these studies found 43% increased risk of ALS.  For AD, the association with MF was stronger in studies that directly measured MF exposure.  Overall, these studies found 58% increased risk for AD."

Joel M. Moskowitz, Ph.D.
Director
Center for Family and Community Health
School of Public Health
University of California, Berkeley

Feb. 25, 2013 - A review of 42 studies of occupational exposure to electric and magnetic fields (MF) and neurodegenerative diseases found "moderately increased risk" for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)."

"Although little evidence was found for other neurodegenerative diseases including dementia and multiple sclerosis, few studies had been conducted on these diseases.

"The paper concludes, "We observed moderate associations between indicators of occupational MF exposure ... and AD," but the Abstract states, "We found weak associations for occupational MF exposure proxies with AD."

"Despite statistically significant findings, the authors argued that, "Our results do not support MF as the explanation for observed associations ... Because the associations we observed indicate potential risks but are far from decisive, we suggest that improved studies are needed."

"That this paper downplayed the risks of MF exposure is not surprising because the study was sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), a nonprofit organization funded by the electrical utility industry. The paper's first author, Ximena Vergara, is an EPRI employee, and the other authors are academics whose research has been supported by EPRI.

"But even if there had been no conflicts of interest, scientists rarely assert they have conclusive evidence. In fact, such assertions are generally antithetical to scientific inquiry, which is typically a never-ending process that calls for more research. . . .

Dental Amalgam Fillings React to Electromagnetic Fields (EMF)

Increases Mercury's High Volatility and Extreme Toxicity Exposures

Oral galvanism and Electromagnetic Fields(EMF): factors along with mercury's high volatility and extreme toxicity in significant exposure levels and oral effects from amalgam fillings. B. Windham (Ed.)

"Having dissimilar metals in the teeth (e.g.-amalgam, or gold and mercury, or stainless steel and mercury) causes galvanic action, electrical currents, and much higher mercury vapor levels and levels in oral tissues. (1-11,30) The amount of mercury released into saliva has been found by large studies to be about 1.5 to 1.9 micrograms per liter for each additional amalgam filling (26). The amount of mercury released by a gold alloy bridge over amalgam over a 10 year period was measured to be approx. 101 milligrams(mg)(60% of total) or 30 micrograms(ug) per day(7), and other studies have found similar results( 4). Average mercury levels in gum tissue near amalgam fillings are about 200 ppm, and are the result of flow of mercury into the mucous membrane because of galvanic currents with the mucous membrane serving as cathode and amalgam metals as anode(1-4). Concentrations of mercury in oral mucosa for a population of patients with 6 or more amalgam fillings taken during oral surgery were 20 times the level of controls(14), and levels in root tips of 41 ppm(5). Amalgam also releases significant amounts of silver, tin, and copper which also have toxic effects, with organic tin compounds formed in the body being even more neurotoxic than inorganic mercury. Amalgam containing zinc produced higher galvaniccurrents(3b).

"Mercury and other metals accumulate in the oral cavity in fibroblasts, macrophages, and multinuclear giant cells of connective tissue, in blood vessel walls, along nerve sheath fibres, in basement-membranes of mucosal epithelium, striated muscle fibres, along collagen bundles and elastic tissue, in acini of salivary glands, and in tooth roots and jaw bones(5,11). Such mercury including that in the commonly formed amalgam tattoos moves to other parts of the body over time in significant amounts and more rapidly than the other metals. Macrophages remove mercury by phagocytosis and the mercury moves to other parts of the body through the blood and alongnerves(5). Most dentists are not aware of the main source of amalgam tattoos, oral galvanism, where electric currents caused by mixed metals in the mouth take the metals into the gums and oral mucosa, accumulating at the base of teeth with large fillings or metal crowns over amalgam base(1-5). Such metals are documented to cause local and systemic lesions and health effects, which usually recover after removal of the amalgam tattoo by surgery(5fghi). The high levels of accumulated mercury also are dispersed to other parts of the body. . . .
